Lightweight, non-greasy and with high sun protection properties — what more can you ask for in a sunscreen?

Shiseido Perfect UV Protector S

The Promise
: Its exclusive SuperVeil-UV 360 and unique WetForce technologies promises to thoroughly protect skin from the sun’s damaging UV rays, even when you’re sweaty and wet. In addition to sensitive skins, it’s also gentle enough to be applied onto little children’s delicate skins too.

The Verdict: A fan of the non-greasy finish, this is the most liquid, texture-wise, among the four. There is a slight white cast upon application that might need a little bit more work massaging the product in, but it does go away quickly. Definitely a sunscreen that’s better suited for outdoor activities, like going to the beach or playing sports, than for daily use to the office.

Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen SPF40

The Promise:
An invisible, oil- and fragrance-free sunscreen, it contains antioxidants to protect the skin against damaging UV rays but also soothes and hydrates the skin thanks to the use of Red Algae, Frankincense and Meadowfoam Seed extracts.

The Verdict: I was taken by surprise at its clear formulation, since most sunscreens are white. This felt a little slippery on the skin after application, most likely due to the silica in the formulation. Personally, I’m not a fan of silica in my skincare products as while it gives skin a smooth appearance, I find that it doesn’t help my makeup adhere well, as I had some product pilling — where you get little balls of products when you run your finger across the face, after makeup application.

Dr. Jart+ UV Every Sun Day

The Promise:
In addition to its high sun protection properties, the Every Sun Day High Protection sunscreen also contains moisturising ingredients — Flower Complex, Aloe Vera and Portulaca Oleracea (a type of succulent) extracts, to soothe and nourish the skin.

The Verdict: Similar to the Lancôme UV Expert Youth Shield Aqua Gel, the sunscreen appears thick out of the tube, but once applied it feels lightweight and absorbs easily. And as it doesn’t leave a tacky finish behind, it is perfect for hot and humid climates. This is definitely a keeper.

Lancôme UV Expert Youth-Shield™ Aqua Gel SPF50 PA++++

The Promise:
Not only protects the skin against harmful UVA and UVB rays but its antioxidant- and anti-pollution rich formula prevents free radical damage and keeps skin looking youthful.

The Verdict: Even though the label says it’s a gel, its texture is thicker in consistency. But do not let that put you off, as upon application, the texture is light and absorbs quickly. Best bit? It doesn’t leave a tacky finish behind. In addition, it has a slightly mattifying finish that keeps skin feeling fresh, which is ideal in Singapore’s humid weather. This is fast becoming one of my favourite new sunscreens.
