Ask any Singaporean what their favourite thing about our little red dot is, and they’ll say it’s Singapore’s mouth-watering cuisines! Singapore has recently become a major food innovation hub and is also home to numerous homegrown brands which are churning out trendy fusion flavours and captivating the nation’s palate. One such company is Crusty’s - an upcoming local brand with salted egg fish skin crisps that taste as if they were fresh out of a zichar restaurant.
Here at Sample Store, we had the chance to try four of Crusty’s fan-favourites - three different flavours of their Soy Skin Crisps, and one flavour of their Fish Skin Crisps, so you can know what the hype is all about! And with the majority of Singapore’s population retreating back indoors this pandemic period, it could be the perfect time for you to stock up on these savoury treats.
These addictive Soy Skin Crisps are sure to tantalize your taste buds with their crispy texture and unique flavours! Made from crispy rolled bean curd skin, the “vegetarian mock goose chips” are also jam-packed with aromatic flavours and ready for immediate consumption. While the Soy Skin Crisps originally came in Salted Egg and Wasabi Seaweed flavours, Crusty’s has added a new addition - the Original Soy Skin Crisps for those who crave that unadulterated, pure taukee taste!
Crusty's Salted Egg Soy Skin Crisps
When it comes to favourite local flavours, salted egg will always top the list. We love how Crusty’s Salted Egg Soy Skin Crisps are super thin and crispy, and that’s thanks to the skin being fried twice to achieve maximum lightness and crunch. Most of the pieces are also broken into smaller parts, making it easy to pop in the mouth. We also appreciate how the chips are not oily and came with an almost creamy, spicy aftertaste that left us craving for more.
Crusty's Wasabi Seaweed Soy Skin Crisps
Even if you aren’t the biggest fan of wasabi, you’ll love Crusty’s Wasabi Seaweed. The wasabi isn’t too strong to the point where your nose would feel like it is flaring up, and gave off a slightly muted flavour. The saltiness and spiciness of the chips are more apparent, giving a different spin on this wasabi-flavoured snack.
Crusty's Original Soy Skin Crisps
Some of us are #teamoriginal, and it’s because we believe simpler, original flavours are often the best! In this case, we feel that Crusty’s Original Soy Skin Crisps is the winner despite its simple flavours, and the sweet hints of taukee made us reminisce about our favourite vegetarian bee hoon. You can even pair this with your rice or salad to add some flair to plain ol’ dishes.
Crusty’s also has a range of regular Fish Skin Crisps with one of their most popular flavours being the Hot & Spicy Chicken Fish Skin Crisps, inspired by Samyang's spicy Korean instant noodles!
Crusty's Hot and Spicy Chicken Fish Skin Crisps
Upon opening the packet, we could instantly tell that the Hot & Spicy Chicken flavour truly packs a punch. While its red packaging and strong mala aroma may appear slightly intimidating, trust us when we say that the spiciness is very bearable and the taste is superb. Based on personal opinion, the spiciness level is around three out of five, and you could taste the hints of Korean spices and chilli peppers.
