Packing a diaper bag can be an exhausting task as parents need to be prepared for every possible scenario. Soiled clothes, hunger pangs, or even random hiccups are just part and parcel of going out with kids. We often see parents lugging giant bags of baby paraphernalia, struggling with the sheer weight of it all. But is everything in those bags truly essential?
Whether you’re bringing your baby to a follow-up review at the hospital or heading out for a fun day in the sun—or air-conditioned mall—you don’t need the whole inventory with you. To make your life easier, we’ve weeded out the deadweight and assembled a handy checklist for you the next time you want to bring your baby outdoors.
Diapers Obviously, diapers are one of the must-haves for a diaper bag. But how many do you need exactly? 1 diaper for every two hours would be a rough gauge, but always add 1 more than you think you need, just in case. Keeping at least 3-4 diapers in the bag at all times is a good habit that keeps you prepared for all circumstances.
Baby wipes (and antibacterial) A pack or two of baby-safe wet wipes are necessary for soiled diaper changes. Include a pack of antibacterial wet wipes to sanitize everything else!
Changing mat You don’t want to rest your baby on a public changing table that is likely covered in other kids’ germs and bacteria. Many diaper bags on the market now include this as well, so you may not need to buy a separate one, but if your bag doesn’t already come with it, this is a necessity for sure. It’ll come in handy anywhere!
Plastic bags for dirty diapers/clothes This is an item that’s easy to overlook but can be so useful in a pinch! It might be hard to find a trash bin in some places, or it might be too inconvenient for you to reach. A plastic bag or two in your diaper bag can be a lifesaver for used diapers or soiled clothes until you find a trash can.
Clean outfit for baby Food spills, unexpected milk vomit, poop accidents are all potential crises waiting to happen. Keep a spare outfit in your diaper bag at all times so your baby won’t have to be stuck in stained, foul-smelling clothes.
Burp cloth & bib These are a must when feeding, in case of milk spit-up, baby vomit, or simply to catch drips and spills.
Milk bottle + formula (if needed)
Some mothers may prefer to bring expressed milk in bottle form rather than nurse outside, while others may be using formula instead. If you’re doing the former, you may choose to keep the bottled breast milk in a cooler bag although room temperature is fine as well. If you’re using formula, most of Singapore’s malls have a dedicated nursing room with hot and cold water dispensers, but if you’re bringing your little one outdoors and not near a mall, remember to pack enough clean water for mixing with the formula.
Baby Oil We all need a little relief for upset stomachs or bloating, especially our younger ones who may need extra help in digesting a satiating meal of nourishing milk. The Eagle Brand Eucalyptus Baby Oil, made with the natural goodness of three oils: coconut, eucalyptus, and fennel, works effectively to provide instant soothing relief for stomach wind and discomfort in babies and young kids. It can also be a relaxing, warming oil to help them drift off to sleep. For example, you can apply it in light, circular motions from your baby’s shoulder to wrist, until your baby feels relaxed. It’s even great for babies’ leg and back massages! You can try it out from the SG Baby Box.
Hand sanitizer Sanitizing your hands is a good practice especially during these times. You’ll need clean and relatively germ-free hands to handle your baby’s food and when touching their cute little faces. If you’re using alcohol-based sanitizers, choose those that have at least 60% alcohol concentration as they’ve been proven to be more effective at killing germs. Non-toxic alcohol-free ones are great options to consider as well.
Baby moisturiser/lotion To protect and hydrate your precious one’s delicate, tender skin, this baby-safe, hypoallergenic crème is specially formulated to soothe, nourish, and moisturize sensitive skin that reacts to even the tiniest triggers, which often go undetected until an angry, red rash appears. Being meticulously tested under Dermatological and Paediatric control, the Embryolisse Lait-Creme Sensitive contains no fragrance whatsoever, so that infants and children with sensitive noses won’t be affected by any strong smell. Suitable for adults and babies alike, keep this light and milky solution in your diaper bag for a quick pick-me-up when your skin feels tired or when your baby’s skin gets irritated. It can even double up as a makeup remover! Get this as part of the SG Baby Box.
Swaddle cloth/blanket This doesn’t just serve one function—swaddling—but also doubles up as a blanket whenever your baby needs (when nursing, napping, colder temperatures, in case of spills in the stroller, etc.).
Baby-safe sunscreen In Singapore’s sweltering heat, sunscreen is a must against harmful UV rays and sunburn. It’s smart to keep a handy bottle of sunscreen on standby in your diaper bag, to reapply after every 2 hours or if you get stuck without shade unexpectedly. The ISDIN Fotoprotector Fusion Water Pediatrics SPF50 PA+++ is a great hypoallergenic, dermatologically and paediatrically tested sunscreen for children six months and above. It has innovative Wet Skin Technology that retains the sunscreen’s efficacy even with perspiration or water activities, while Fusion Water’s Safe-Eye Tech™ also prevents stinging in the eyes, making it perfectly safe for your little one. You’ll find this included in the SG Baby Box.
Sun hat Besides the sunscreen, a hat is important to protect your baby’s little head, which gets easily sunburnt but may go unnoticed at first because of the hair. Since it’s harder to detect, play safe by donning a cute sun hat on your baby and you get to snap some adorable photos, too!
Baby-safe insect repellent Dengue-carrying mosquitoes are prevalent in our hot and humid weather, so keep your baby safe from itchy bites with a repellent that is free from DEET (a strong chemical included in many insect repellents), to protect your baby’s sensitive skin.
Snacks What’s a day out without some healthy, tasty snacks for the rest of the family? An e-commerce extension of everyone’s beloved household name Mr Bean, you’ll find preservative-free, freshly made chiffon cakes, soy milk pouches, soy granola bars and more at BeanMyDay.com. So there you have it! A checklist of essentials that shouldn’t weigh you down but keep you fully prepared for a safe, fun outing with your little one. As you go out with your baby more often, you’ll be able to predict scenarios with more precision and can tweak your diaper bag to better suit your specific needs.
